I write about the real cost of running a home — not the sticker price of an appliance, but what it actually costs you every month after you plug it in. My approach starts from a simple frustration: most appliance advice either repeats the manufacturer's marketing copy or invents specific numbers that sound authoritative but can't be checked. I do neither. Every running-cost claim on this site is built from published data — ENERGY STAR and Department of Energy figures, manufacturer spec sheets and EnergyGuide labels — worked through the actual math, not just repeated as a headline stat. Where the real data supports it, I dig into patterns across manufacturer and retailer reviews to see what actually shows up again and again, not just what one or two people happened to complain about. I'd rather tell you "here's the formula, here's a real cited number, plug in your own electricity rate" than pretend I've personally run a five-year test on every appliance category I cover. If a number on this site is specific, it's either sourced or clearly labeled as an illustrative example, not presented as something I measured myself. When I'm not cross-checking a spec sheet against an EnergyGuide label, I'm probably arguing that a $40 chest freezer upgrade pays for itself faster than people think.
